The Wellcome Trust Foundation is funding this three-year pathfinder project to increase the application of data science in Africa. Large volumes of health data are produced in many African nations, and it should be possible to use recent developments in data analysis techniques, such as machine learning and
artificial intelligence, across national boundaries. The project’s main goals are to increase national teams’ machine learning capabilities and to develop and enhance data analytics expertise utilizing powerful AI tools. The initiative will be coordinated in Nairobi, Kenya, and carried out in Senegal, Ethiopia, and Cameroon where the project is located at the Douala General Hospital (DGH).
JOB SUMMARY
In order to support the project in Cameroon, the DSWB-DGH team is looking to hire a Data Manager. The selected candidate will be in charge of maintaining the quality, integrity, and efficiency of data management processes, facilitating effective data analysis and decision-making, and contributing to the project’s overall success.
DATA MANAGER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Develop and implement a data management plan that prioritizes data quality throughout the research lifecycle.Design and implement data collection procedures to minimize errors and ensure data consistency.Clean and validate research data using appropriate tools and techniques (e.g., data cleaning software, scripting languages).Develop and maintain data dictionaries and codebooks to document data definitions and standards.Implement data quality control measures, including data validation rules and data integrity checks.Monitor data quality metrics and identify potential issues.Collaborate with researchers and IT staff on data storage, access, and security.Stay up-to-date on best practices in data management and data quality.Contribute to the design of protocols, which includes the methodology, analysis, quality control and reporting sections for both quantitative and qualitative data.Oversee and coordinate the process from data capture to data sharingPerform statistical analyses using appropriate statistical tools for planned data presentations and communications related to a given study Liaise with project coordinator to follow-up data errors, discrepancies, and missing information for ongoing data cleaningMaintain the integrity, security and data backup of the study databaseREQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Master’s in Computer Science, biostatistics, Data science or statistics or any related field with experience in scientific research data management.Working experienceMinimum 5 years’ experience as data manager or data analyst in a projectBasic programming skills in Python or R for data analysisUnderstanding Machine learning concepts and techniquesProficiency in using database management systems such as SQL, MySQL or OracleKnowledge of data pre-processing and data integration techniquesExperience with electronic health records and data collection tools.Familiarity with data visualization and reporting tools such as Tableau or Power BI.Excellent analytical, communication, problem-solving skills and great attention to detail.Ability to work independently and as part of a team while collaborating with stakeholders.Familiarity with data governance policies and procedures.Languages
