One place separates fifth-placed Luzern from Thun in the Swiss Super League table ahead of their gameweek three clash at Swissporarena.

While both clubs remain unbeaten, the visitors have gone through rounds one and two without dropping a point, and the newly-promoted side aim to secure a third consecutive win to kick off the season.

Luzern’s season has started quite entertainingly, beginning with a 3-2 victory at Grasshoppers on opening day and a 1-1 draw with Zurich last weekend.

Having come back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in the first gameweek, Mario Frick’s team could not maintain their lead last time out, conceding six minutes after Adrian Grbic scored in the 72nd minute.

After avoiding defeat in both matches, Luzern now look to remain undefeated in three consecutive games in the league for the first time since February-March this year, when they beat Sion and drew twice with Yverdon and Basel.

Historical results in this fixture before Thun’s relegation five years ago usually favoured Luzern, who earned seven points from their final three matches before the former’s exit, scoring five goals and keeping clean sheets in both wins. 

All but one meeting in cup encounters in the last five years have also gone their way, though Thun required penalties in 2023’s domestic cup to eliminate Die Leuchten.

These competitive victories have followed a consistent pattern of scoring and conceding across all four pre-season games, which might not be sustainable long-term.

Nevertheless, despite conceding in both league wins, the wins have shown different qualities — Thun needed a comeback in their first game and displayed resilience when holding on in round two after their two-goal lead was halved.

Although two games are a small sample, Thun’s ability to win in different ways could be a vital asset if they are to survive this season after ending their five-year absence from the top flight.

Luzern could be missing up to four players on Saturday, withIsmajl Beka, Jesper Lofgren, Julian von Moos and Lars Villiger all uncertain to feature.

Grbic has scored two of Die Leuchten’s four goals after two matches and aims to add to his tally against the new boys.

Thun appear to have come through gameweeks one and two injury-free, giving Lustrinelli a fully fit squad for round three’s fixture in Lucerne.

Like Grbic, Leonardo Bertone has scored half of his team’s four goals, both coming in the comeback win over Lugano, and he looks to be a decisive factor on Saturday.

Genis Montolio Lafuente, last weekend’s match-winner, performed well at centre-back in both victories and hopes to produce another solid display in gameweek three.
