Jacques Villeneuve says Ferrari’s decision to extend Fred Vasseur’s leadership into 2026 may reflect internal comfort rather than competitive momentum.
Ferrari recently confirmed it will stick with Vasseur beyond 2025, ending speculation around a potential move for ex-Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.
But Villeneuve told La Gazzetta dello Sport the call may be more about team chemistry than results. “If they chose to continue with him, it means the drivers are happy to work with him and feel protected,” said the 1997 world champion.
“They’ve formed a group, the three of them, and that could be good for the future. “But if we rely solely on the results, we can’t ignore the fact that Ferrari hasn’t progressed under him.”
Villeneuve also responded to Charles Leclerc’s frequent claims that winning with Ferrari would mean more than just becoming world champion elsewhere.
“It’s a nice message for the team and fans,” said Villeneuve. “But I don’t think it’s true. A true driver wants to win — that’s all that matters. “Winning with Ferrari, when others haven’t, is even better. But time passes, and every driver has to make smart choices about their future.”
On Lewis Hamilton’s struggles adapting to Maranello, Villeneuve said the problem may be more systemic than personal.
“He’s coming from a completely different background — English and German methods,” he explained. “Ferrari’s internal confusion, even on the radio, isn’t helping his adaptation.”
So what comes next for the 40-year-old Hamilton? “Next year will be the real showdown with Leclerc,” Villeneuve said. “This car wasn’t designed for him. But with so much attention on his arrival, it’s fair to say this first phase has been disappointing.”
