Thun vs. Lausanne

Thun and Lausanne Sport, both of whom needed turnarounds in gameweek one, are set to face off in round two of the Swiss Super League at Stockhorn Arena on Sunday.

The promoted team made a big comeback, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Lugano, and Mauro Lustrinelli’s squad are keen to keep their good momentum going against the visitors, who are coming off a 5-0 victory over Vardar in the Conference League second qualifying round.

Thun returned to the Swiss top division after five years away with an away win at Lugano, against whom they needed a second-half turnaround to secure maximum points.

Lustrinelli’s team fell behind to Ousmane Doumbia‘s 16th-minute strike, and it remained that way until the interval; however, Leonardo Bertone equalised from the spot just after the hour and scored the decisive goal five minutes from regular time.

By winning their opening gameweek, Thun enter Sunday’s match as one of six teams with a 100% record after the opening round, continuing their unbeaten run since mid-July.

Having scored four goals in pre-season wins over Lugano (4-2) and Aarau (4-1), the club from the Bernese Highlands will have been pleased to carry their goalscoring form into the season proper, albeit after netting twice against an opponent they beat in their warm-up matches.

Nevertheless, the lack of clean sheets during the off-season continued into the opening weekend, giving free-scoring Lausanne plenty of encouragement heading into Sunday’s clash.

Although there was a change of head coach in Vaud, with Peter Zeidler replacing Ludovic Magnin in the off-season, the German manager has made a positive start domestically and in Europe.

Despite a setback in his first competitive fixture in charge of the Blue and White, losing to Vardar in Europa League qualifying, the next two results against Winterthur and the Macedonian outfit have restored early-season confidence.

After overcoming a 1-0 and 2-1 deficit in the opening round’s eventual 3-2 league victory, Lausanne scored five without reply against Vardar, advancing to the third round in Conference League qualifying after a 6-2 aggregate win, and they are seeking a third win in succession across all competitions on Sunday.

Strikingly for Zeidler’s team, Thursday’s turnaround marked their first clean sheet since the start of pre-season, and they aim to record back-to-back competitive shutouts for the first time since December 2024, when they kept Winterthur and Zurich from scoring in 3-0 wins in the Swiss Cup and Super League, respectively.

However, recent league meetings between these clubs favour Thun, with Lausanne losing three of the last five, drawing two, and failing to claim maximum points in this fixture in the top flight since April 2017.

While Thun have no apparent injury concerns ahead of Sunday afternoon, the hosts will assess Justin Roth‘s fitness after he was forced off with a possible knock in the first round’s win at Lugano.

After netting nine league goals in their promotion campaign, Bertone’s brace last time out suggests that the midfielder is not letting up in the Super League.

Although Nils Reichmuth, last season’s second top scorer, failed to find the net last week, the attacking midfielder will hope for more success on Sunday.

Unlike Thun, Lausanne face several injury concerns, with Alvyn Sanches sidelined with a severe knee injury, Enzo Kana-Biyik managing a muscle issue and Hamza Abdallah carrying a knock.

Gaoussou Diakite was the hero in gameweek one, scoring a brace either side of Kaly Sene‘s goal, and both players aim to make a difference this weekend.

Sene was particularly impressive on Thursday, scoring twice from both efforts on target against Vardar, and the forward aims to score in three consecutive games within a week.
