The tenth FIFA Futsal World Cup is running in Uzbekistan until 6 October.
For the third time in the four editions since the expansion to 24 teams, all seven European contenders advanced from the group stage, which ended on Sunday. Those seven include world and European champions, Portugal, who now meet Kazakhstan, who they beat on penalties in the 2021 World Cup semis.
Other teams through include France, who went out in the group stage in their only previous major tournament, UEFA Futsal EURO 2018, and the Netherlands, set for their first finals knockout game since EURO 1999, playing Ukraine, a side they defeated 3-2 in the EURO 2022 opening game as hosts in Amsterdam. That match is on Tuesday when the knockout phase begins.
