Sports Mole previews Sunday’s Major League Soccer clash between Minnesota United and Colorado Rapids, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Meeting for the first time in the 2025 MLS campaign, Minnesota United welcome the Colorado Rapids to Allianz Field for a Sunday matinee affair.
With nine matches remaining, the Loons are third in the Western Conference, winning their last league fixture 2-1 at St Louis City, while the Rapids are ninth heading into the weekend, after a 3-1 defeat versus the Philadelphia Union.
Match preview
It is back to the MLS campaign for Minnesota after they were eliminated in the group phase of the Leagues Cup with one win and two defeats.
Heading into the home stretch of the regular season, only two points currently separate them in third from the conference leaders, San Diego.
Minnesota are only three wins shy of equalling their best ever MLS regular season in terms of points, currently on 44 at this stage of the year.
Eric Ramsay’s men have points in six of their previous seven league contests, with their lone defeat in that run coming in their last home game against Los Angeles FC (1-0).
A triumph on Sunday would equal their longest winning run of the regular season (two games) and assure they don’t suffer consecutive home defeats for the first time in 2025.
The Loons have won their last four meetings at home against the Colorado Rapids, winning those last two outings by a margin of 3-0 both times.
Clinging to the final post-season spot at the beginning of this week, the Rapids can assure they remain in that position at the very least with a victory on Sunday.
Although they failed to make it out of the Leagues Cup group stage, this team showed a lot more consistency in that competition, earning points in two of their three matches.
Chris Armas’s men have claimed just one victory in their previous six MLS affairs and have won one of their last three league encounters in August since 2023 (3-2 at Dallas in 2024).
Colorado are winless in their last nine domestic contests away from home, while conceding three goals in three successive league games as the visitors.
The Burgundy Boys have failed to win their last three away matches in this competition when netting the opening goal, resulting in eight points being dropped.
Not since the 2021 campaign have they managed to collect maximum points in the regular season in Minnesota, claiming a 3-1 triumph at Allianz Field four years ago.

Team News
It is unlikely we will see Hassani Dotson feature for Minnesota on Sunday as he is recovering from a meniscus injury, while Kipp Keller is also doubtful with a hamstring strain.
Kelvin Yeboah converted two penalties in the second half against St Louis, enabling the Loons to come from behind and earn three points.
The Rapids might be missing Connor Ronan this weekend as he deals with an ankle issue, while they traded Djordje Mihailovic to Toronto on Thursday, receiving over £6.5 million in return.
Rafael Navarro put them ahead against the Union late last month, only for them to concede three unanswered goals in the final 45 minutes.
Minnesota United possible starting lineup:
St. Clair; Gressel, Diaz, Boxall, Duggan, Markanich; Oluwaseyi, Lod, Trapp, Hlongwane; Yeboah
Colorado Rapids possible starting lineup:
Steffen; Cannon, Maxso, Murphy, Vines; Bassett, Atencio; Harris, Yapi, Ku-DiPietro; Navarro
We say: Minnesota United 2-0 Colorado Rapids
Trading Mihailovic may be a worthwhile move in the long term for the Rapids, but in the short term, we believe they will struggle to create much without him against a Loons side that have allowed the second-fewest goals in the Western Conference this year (28).
