Germany Women and Spain Women will be vying for a place in the Women’s Euro 2025 final when they lock horns in Wednesday’s last-four tie in Zurich.

DFB-Frauen dug deep to see off France in the quarter-finals, while La Roja dispatched tournament hosts Switzerland to seal their semi-final berth.

Match preview

Record European champions Germany are two games away from winning the competition for the ninth time after successfully negotiating their way to the semi-finals.

Christian Wuck‘s charges kicked off the tournament with consecutive wins over Poland and Denmark, before they fell to a heavy 4-1 defeat in their final group game against Sweden, ensuring they had to settle for second place and a quarter-final tie against France.

Germany’s hopes of progressing against France were dealt a significant blow when Kathrin Hendrich was sent off in the 13th minute for pulling Griedge Mbock‘s hair, gifting the chance for Grace Geyoro to score the subsequent penalty.

Despite being left a player light, Sjoeke Nusken headed home from a near-post corner to restore parity, although she missed the chance to win the game in the second half when she saw her penalty saved by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

However, Peyraud-Magnin’s opposite number, Ann-Katrin Berger ultimately proved to be the quarter-final hero, pulling off a stunning save in extra time to send the tie to penalties, where she saved two and scored one to keep her country in the competition.

Germany are now preparing for an almighty test against the tournament favourites, but they can take confidence from the fact that they have not ended up on the losing side in any of their previous eight matches with Spain (W5, D3), including a 1-0 victory in the bronze medal match at the 2024 Olympics.

DFB-Frauen have also progressed from nine of their 10 semi-final ties at the Women’s European Championships, with their only failure taking place at the 1993 tournament when they lost on penalties to Italy.

Spain Women's Aitana Bonmati on July 11, 2025

After winning the World Cup and Nations League in the past two years, Spain are moving closer to adding the Women’s European Championship trophy to their collection.

La Roja saw off Portugal and Belgium in their opening two games, before they came from behind in their final group match against Italy to clinch top spot in Group B with a 3-1 victory.

Spain then had to remain patient in their quarter-final clash against Switzerland after Mariona Caldentey saw her ninth-minute penalty saved by Chelsea’s Livia Peng.

Substitute Athenea del Castillo found the all-important breakthrough in the 66th minute after being teed up by Aitana Bonmati‘s clever backheel, before Claudia Pina quickly added a second to take the game away from Switzerland.

Alexia Putellas missed Spain’s second penalty of the game in the closing stages, but it ultimately had no impact on the result, as La Roja kept their second clean sheet of the tournament to seal a 2-0 victory.

Spain have now equalled their best-ever performance at the Women’s European Championships, having reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1997 when their hopes of a final appearance were ended by a 2-1 defeat to Italy.

While Spain are searching for their first win over Germany, they will still be the favourites to progress from the last four tie after winning 12 of their previous 13 internationals, scoring at least three goals in 10 of those victories.

Team News

Germany Women's Jule Brand on July 12, 2025

Germany defender Sarai Linder has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after she sustained an ankle ligament injury in Saturday.

Linder has joined captain Giulia Gwinn on the sidelines, while Hendrich is suspended following her early red card in the quarter-final.

Wamser will return to the side after serving a one-match ban, and there could also be starting places for Sophia Kleinherne and Lea Schuller.

Meanwhile, Spain defender Laia Aleixandri will serve a one-match ban after picking up her second yellow card of the tournament in Friday’s quarter-final.

Jana Fernandez and Maria Mendez are the options to replace the 24-year-old, with the former likely to be given the nod to partner Irene Paredes in central defence.

The tournament’s top scorer, Esther Gonzalez, will be looking to add to her four-goal tally when he features in the front three with Mariona Caldentey and Claudia Pina.

Germany Women possible starting lineup:

Berger; Wamser, Knaak, Minge, Kleinherne, Kett; Brand, Senss, Nusken, Buhl; Schuller

Spain Women possible starting lineup:

Coll; Batlle, Paredes, Aleixandri, Carmona; Bonmati, Guijarro, Putellas; Caldentey, Pina, Gonzalez

We say: Germany Women 1-2 Spain Women

Germany proved in their quarter-final success that they have the fight and determination to trouble a team of Spain’s quality, but while we think they will run their opponents close, we believe the effects of playing over 100 minutes with 10 players could take its toll, especially as they will have to work hard without the ball against a side that usually dominate the possession stats.

With all that in mind, we think the world champions will do just enough to claim a narrow victory to advance to their first-ever Women’s European Championship final.
