The Mutengene water scheme, a project meant to supply potable water to residents of Mutengene in Tiko Subdivision, South West, has today been inaugurated by the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam.
The water project consists of a water catchment constructed at Mile 14 Dibanda, which has already been supplying Mutengene residents for months now.
The project was realized by the Council Support Fund (FEICOM) and the German Corporation KFW and is being managed by the Tiko Council.
Prior to today’s inauguration, the Council has installed at least 42 public in 20 quarters in Mutengene.
However, the water scheme yet to be fully commissioned and utilized.
In March, the Mayor of Tiko, Chief Mesoso Peter Ikome, said the water had not been fully handed to the Council to manage and this created disparities in consumption among residents.
Some private individuals, he alleged, were stealing water from the catchment into their homes. Today’s inauguration will pave way for the water to be fully utilized.
The project is expected to meet the potable water needs of thousands of people living in Mutengene, and bail the town out of a longstanding water shortage.
The scheme is part of an enlarged project by the government and its partners to provide potable water to the entire Fako Division, which, despite its rich water potentials, continues to battle with water scarcity.
Key towns in the Division, like Buea and Limbe, continue to suffer from water scarcity, with many people turning to boreholes for drinking water despite reported health risks.
